Czech carmaker Škoda Auto is preparing for a future dominated by Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs). For now at least, according to Škoda the Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) is very much alive. Dytrich is of the opinion that ICE technology will remain alive for most parts probably at least in a decade yet, as an established risk-free choice till BEVs begin consuming even more biscuit. Instead of putting all its eggs in one basket, Skoda is not only continuing to invest in ICE but also looking at how it might bridge the gap between older tech and new EV tech.
Potential Replacements for ICE Platforms
Most carmakers are rapidly scaling back ICE investment in favour of EVs, but Skoda remains open to further developing its current internal-combustion-engine platform. Dytrych says the company is actually “talking about a lot of things” and looking at potential modifications to existing ICE platforms. Under its future vision, Skoda also aspires at substantial exports from India of Completely Knocked Down (CKD) kits. Skoda has announced that it will commence exports of CKD kits for its models based on the MQB-A0-IN platform starting next month with Vietnam and Kazakhstan being the first two markets in line. The export strategy of the company reinforces Skoda’s commitment to expand its footprint in established markets and minimize production cost leveraging capabilities from Indian market as they believe it is possible for a low-cost manufacturing environment especially when combined with key exports.

Apart from its global aspirations, the company is also concentrating to increase their foothold in India – one of world’s most competitive car market. The launch of Kylaq compact SUV at a starting price of INR 7.89 lakh in recent times is an example by itself to this commitment The Kylaq is planned to be engineered and priced so that it can make a dent in the base end of the booming Indian market, with Skoda targeting an increase from 27% to exhaust up-to-60%.
